‘Medieval Kerala and Sanskrit Theatre’ – Talk by Kesavan Veluthat on 12 July 2014

‘Medieval Kerala and Sanskrit Theatre’ – Talk by Kesavan Veluthat on 12 July 2014
Talk by
Kesavan Veluthat
11.00am on Saturday, 12 July 2014
At: Vaikkom Chandrasekharan Nair Seminar Hall, Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi, Thrissur

Kesavan Veluthat will be presenting his recent findings on reading literary texts from medieval Kerala once again, particularly texts in what is called Manipravalam.

Two things emerge from this study; a) that they are not the products of the cultural decadence and moral degradation of the Namputiris as has been made out by historians like Elamkulam Kunjan Pillai; and b) that they represent a continuation, in every way, of the kavya tradition in Sanskrit, the agency for reaching which in Kerala was the Sanskrit theatre.
